Did you know working out after age 50 is cool – trendy, even?
A fitness industry report ranks “fitness programs for older adults” as the eighth biggest trend for 2020.
The Health & Fitness Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine issues its report annually. Results again highlight the power of the Baby Boomer and older generations – and should also start including Generation X, who have begun entering their 50s.
“These individuals in general have more discretionary money than their younger counterparts do, and fitness clubs may be able to capitalize on this growing market. People are living longer, working longer, and remaining healthy and active much longer.”
Just past the top 10, “functional fitness training,” which is also popular for active adults, came in at No. 12.
“This is a trend toward using strength training to improve balance, coordination, muscular strength, and endurance to improve activities of daily living typically for older adults but also in clinical populations,” the report says.
For you, this means that people over 50 are increasingly valued by the fitness industry – including us, of course! Gyms, studios and trainers are beginning to really want “older” people among their clientele and are learning more all the time about helping you meet your fitness goals.
What are some of the other top trends for the coming year? The report ranks the Top 5 as:
1. Wearable technology
2. High-intensity interval training (HIIT)
3. Group training
4. Training with free weights
5. Personal training
